SUMMARY:A FORUM WITH ELECTORAL COMMISSION ON GUIDELINES FOR ELECTION OFFICERS AND THE PUBLICATION OF POLLING STATIONS RESULTS ON THE EC WEBSITE
DESCRIPTION:INVITATION TO A FORUM WITH ELECTORAL COMMISSION ON GUIDELINES FOR ELECTION OFFICERS AND THE PUBLICATION OF POLLING STATIONS RESULTS ON THE EC WEBSITE \nThe Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) respectfully invites you to a Forum with Electoral Commission on Guidelines for Election Officers and the Publication of Polling Station Results on the EC Website scheduled for Friday 9thth August\, 2024\, 10:00am at the IDEG House. \nThe European Union (EU) as a result of some gaps identified by the EU Election Observer Mission (EOMs) before\, during\, and after the 2020 general elections in Ghana\, identified 18 recommendations to fine tune Ghana’s electoral process for the 2024 general elections and beyond. Five (5) out of the 18 recommendations have been prioritized by the European Union for implementation. Priority 1 and Priority 2 of the recommendations states that there should be (1) ‘Clear procedures for presiding officers\, returning officers and regional collation officers to be stipulated on how to proceed in cases of irregularities during the counting and collation process\, including over-voting\, mismatched reconciliation\, incomplete and wrongly filled in result forms’ and (2) Publishing comprehensive polling station and collation results on the EC’s website well before the election results petition filing deadline. \nFor further information and clarification please contact Ms. Priscilla Akakpo on 0544-357752 or email pakakpo@ideg.org. \nWe look forward to your kind confirmation and participation.

SUMMARY:STAKEHOLDERS DIALOGUE ON COUNTERING POTENTIAL ELECTION INTERFERENCE IN GHANA
DESCRIPTION:Given the evolving landscape of global politics and the concerning erosion of democratic values across the African continent\, we believe it is of paramount importance to address the issue of election interference\, which has emerged as a significant threat to the sovereignty of democratic nations and the well-being of citizens. \nThe dialogue aims to provide a platform for insightful discussions on the challenges posed by election interference\, both from state and non-state actors. We intend to explore: (1) the tools and mechanisms associated with election interference; and (2) effective strategies and collaborative efforts that can be employed to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s electoral processes as well as democratic rights of citizens in the forthcoming 2024 general elections.

SUMMARY:SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP ON “ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING/COUNTER-TERRORISM FINANCING MEASURES FOR NPO’S IN GHANA” \nThe Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering (GIABA)’s Mutual Evaluation Report (MER) in 2019\, rated Ghana as non-compliant to FATF’s Recommendation 8.  GIABA was particularly concerned that Ghana’s regulatory framework was porous and exposed the NPOs to the abuse of money laundering and financing terrorist activities. Consequently\, in 2020\, Ghana was blacklisted by the European Union (EU) due to weak anti-money laundering and terrorist financing policy and legislative measures. \nIn response\, the Government of Ghana (GoG) undertook a number of steps to strengthen its legal and regulatory frameworks: (1) enacted the Anti-Money Laundering Act\, 2020 (Act 1044); (2) drafted the National Non-Profit Organization Policy 2020; (3) and established the NPO secretariat to facilitate and enforce regular reporting and renewal of operating permits for NPOs. These were aimed at helping the country meet its international obligations relating to AML/CFT measures.  While these measures undeniably contribute to the fight against terrorism\, they have also inadvertently encumbered the operations of civil society organizations (CSOs).  According to ICNL (2021)\, globally there have been a number of cases when overregulation related to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) has negatively affected nonprofit organizations (NPOs). Some of these negative unintended impacts on NPOs include stringent regulations and financial restrictions imposed on NPOs. \nAgainst this background\, IDEG conducted a baseline study to examine the impact of these regulatory measures on the operations of NPOs. IDEG is subsequently\, organizing a sensitization workshop to educate NPO’s and raise awareness on these measures.
