STRENGTHENING REPRESENTATION PARTICIPATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY: THE ELECTION 2020 MANIFESTOS
12 November 2020
After 28 years of operating a hybrid regime of liberal multiparty politics at the national level and a system that prohibits same in local government, development dividends and impact on the quality of democracy have not been fully realized. Public service delivery is poor, economic growth and job creation for the youth slow and the rule of law unsatisfactory. Poverty levels appear to be rising, inequality gap widening, a recurring threat of electoral violence and exclusion of traditional authorities, women, youth, people with disabilities, and some ethnic minorities persists. The country is lagging on addressing inclusive and representational issues with respect to the active participation of women, youth and PWDs in politics and development.
Against this backdrop, the IDEG is holding roundtable on the theme: “Strengthening Representation, Participation and Accountability: The Election 2020 Manifestos”. The roundtable is to provide the platform for the political parties to articulate their manifesto pledges on local government and also propose how they intend to promote inclusion and accountability in the local government through constitutional reform.
