Governing Council
The IDEG is governed by a Council of Trustees (Governing Board), which oversees the work of management. The Council provides decisive leadership, sound policy direction and firm oversight for the implementation of IDEG’s projects. The Governing Council meets four times in the year. The details of the Governing Council are as follows:
Membership of the IDEG Council of Trustees
Board Chair – Prof. Akilagpa Sawyerr is a past member of the Council of State, which is an advisory body to the President of Ghana. He also served as Secretary General of the Association of African Universities (AAU), Accra; member of the Executive Board of Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and former Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana, Legon.
He was the independent Chair of the Tripartite National Steering Committee that oversaw the Structural Adjustment Participatory Review Initiative in Ghana (1997-2001). Prof. Sawyerr is a trade and investment lawyer and also holds the Chair of international NGO boards notably the Third World Network’s African Regional Secretariat in Accra.
Member - Mr. Ato Ampiah is the former Managing Director (MD) of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR). Before his appointment as the MD of TOR, Mr. Ampiah was the proprietor and CEO of Crystal Auto Ltd. and a member of the Ghana Employers Association (GEA) of which he served as President. He is a senior member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana. He also served on the Governing Board of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Geneva, and is a member of the Court of Governors of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, University of Ghana, Legon.
Member - Ms. Phyllis Christian is the CEO and Managing Consultant of Shawbell Consulting, a management consulting firm. Ms. Christian is a Lawyer and Organizational Development Professional who is recognized in the field of professional consultancy services in Ghana. She has extensive expertise in institutional reform and legal consultancy acquired through engagements with public and private sector institutions, multinationals, donor partners, NGOs and the private sector in Ghana, Africa and globally.
Member-Secretary - Dr. Emmanuel O. Akwetey is a political scientist. He is the Executive Director of IDEG and was senior lecturer and research fellow in Stockholm University, Sweden. Dr. Akwetey is the only Council member who is directly involved in the operational management of the Institute.
