Electoral Politics and Accountability
This programme deals with broad and specific questions pertaining to the management of competitive democratic politics as a credible and viable framework for sustaining peace and stability as well as nation-building and equitable development in Ghana. Issues about democratic elections, attendant transitions and post-elections’ governance are critically examined under this progarmme and analysis provided to inform decision-making, reforms and consolidation of the political and economic governance institutions, structures and processes of the state, civil society and the private sector.
The project being implemented under this theme for 2017 include Advocacy for Democratic Devolution. This falls under the the five-year project titled “Multi Party Governance Reform” (MPGR) which was launched in 2014. Following the Presidents declaration to implement a devolved local government system, activities under the project are aimed at advocating and providing technical support for the relisation of the reform. These activities include Meeting with the President, regional consultative dialogues, roundtables, policy dialogues, national consensus conference, etc with stakeholders. Subsequent Cabinet and Parliamentary engagements are planned to ensure Cabinet and parliamentary approval of reforms.
Democracy and Nation Building
This thematic programme focuses on studies, reflections, debates, and dialogues that promote political consensus on pertinent issues of nation building and the deepening of democratic and civic culture in Ghana. Competitive multiparty electoral contests tend to mobilize bias and flare up the structural social cleavages in the multiethnic and heterogeneous Ghanaian society. While this tendency is cyclical and observed forcefully during electoral campaigns, its management tends to be poor and ineffective and, therefore, weakens national cohesion. This sub-program has been designed with the view to improving the management of the negative effects of electioneering on social cohesion and rendering the multiparty democratic politics a viable framework for nation-building.
Projects to be implemented in the year under this programme include Advocacy for Democratic Devolution/ a reformed devolved multiparty government system.
